New Li-Fi Technology to access internet at high speed

With the invention of new Li-fi technology, you will soon find light bulbs of your car, light  lamps in your room, lights in subway, flashlight of your mobile and any other light source are providing you internet access at very high speed.

Li-fi technology is the another milestone in the history of information technology. You have got the idea that Li-Fi Technology is something light. Yes, Li-fi technology or light-fidelity technology transmits data wirelessly  at high speeds with the use of light emitting diodes.

Li-fi technology was first demonstrated by Harald Hass, a German Physicist, at TED talk of 2011.

The li-fi consortium started releasing Li-Fi products for research institutes and universities.

Working of Li-Fi Technology

The functioning of new Li-Fi technology is just simple. You will have a light source at one end like a LED and a photo detector (Light Sensor) on the other end.

As soon as, LED starts glowing, photo detector or light sensor on other end will detect light and get a binary 1 otherwise binary 0.  How can data be transmit via this new Li-F- technology?

Flashing a LED certain times will build up a message to transmit. Flashing of light is detected by the photo detector or light sensor and it will receive a message.

Now, think of several LEDs with some different colors, flashing together and building a huge information to transmit. It is observed that green laser with the red laser can transmit data at 1 GBPS.

Advantages and challenges of Li-Fi Technology

Best advantage of Li-Fi Technology will be accessing internet at high speed in those areas where optical fires are not easy to install. Many times while setting up a wi-fi route, you need to choose a specific spot to place your router so that on an average, it provides good connectivity in all your rooms.

What if, all lights in your rooms will communicate each other and creates a bridge of wireless networks  to provide internet access? Then Li-Fi technology  would be the best optimum solution over Wi-Fi technology. Li-Fi technology can also be used to extend wireless networks at your home, office or university.

Li-Fi Technology can also be used to control traffic conditions by placing this new technology into the LEDs of cars. It can also be used with overhead lights of airplanes.

Besides these advantages, Li-Fi technology has several challenges to face. Li-Fi technology is requires a prefect line-of-sight to transmit data. Other major challenge to face by this new Li-Fi technology is, how optimally data can be transferred back to the transmitter.

I’m just wondering, everyone is sitting under the road lights and accessing internet at such high speeds that they can’t get easily in home, offices and universities.

    I recently watched Prof. Haas’ TED presentation and after reading several articles on Li-Fi, I can easily see it’s potential. However, besides the challenges you pointed out (line-of-sight orientation and one-way data streaming), another problem is the speed that the infrastructure can support. If one is connected to the Internet via copper wire (DSL, for example)the downloads of 300 – 500 Mbs are a pipedream.

      Yes, I agree with you. To take maximum out of a li-fi technology we need to supply it high speed internet also as an input so that further li-wi machines could distribute over the infrastructure.

        can you please tell me how we can implement this tech ,and from where we can get that much speed compatible network or internet. And on more thing i would like to ask you , can we place these devices in place of the RF towers if yes then how we are going to exit these LED devices and how we are going to recieve signals from these towers.

    In li-fi technology LED needs some electric current…if power loss happens what is the solution?

      Hi John, this is a good question. But, researchers will find a way around 😉 by implementing repeaters/amplifiers type stuffs on the stations.
